The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated 9-8-8 as the new, nationwide, three-digit phone number for Americans in crisis to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. Starting in July 2022, Americans in crisis can call the 9-8-8 number to be connected to a trained professional at a crisis center nearest to their location. The hotline will provide free and confidential support to individuals experiencing emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, or other mental health concerns, and will be available 24/7. The 9-8-8 hotline is a critical resource for individuals in crisis and their loved ones, and aims to help prevent suicide and provide immediate support to those in need.
